NMTEC 262 - Advanced Topics in Nuclear Medicine

Addresses advanced topics in Nuclear Medicine. Topics include hematology and immunology, laboratory techniques in nuclear medicine, pediatric nuclear medicine, and nuclear thyroidology.  Includes an introduction to medical research, use of library and professional resources, and reading and interpreting scientific literature. Other topics will be included as they become important to the practice of nuclear medicine. 

Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into program.

Course Outcomes
  • Discuss types of research, ethical considerations in doing research, parts of a research paper, and critical analysis of published articles in the nuclear medicine literature.
  • Find and assess scholarly resources from library databases and professional societies.
  • Discuss pediatric nuclear medicine including patient care techniques, developmental levels, and variations in imaging studies for children.
  • Describe the multiple ways in which nuclear medicine techniques can be used to diagnose and treat conditions of the thyroid gland, including hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer.
  • Outline the use of laboratory equipment, including fume hoods, pipettes, centrifuges, etc. in relation to nuclear medicine procedures such as blood cell labeling.
  • Outline the cells and the functions of the human immune system and the consequences of immune over-reactions such as allergic response and autoimmune diseases.
  • For other advanced nuclear medicine topics, discuss the underlying nature of the problem(s) or illness(es) being addressed, the mechanism and benefit of nuclear medicine imaging, analysis of images, and clinical outcomes.
