CHIN& 121 - Chinese I 5 CR
Introduces basic functional ability in Chinese by acquiring vocabulary and skills in grammar, pronunciation, and the Pinyin (Romanized) writing system. Students practice sounds and tones, vocabulary, listening comprehension, grammatical constructions, and practice pronunciation as well as Chinese character reading and writing. The course includes elements of Chinese culture, art, and music. This course requires real-time interactive language practice. After successful completion, students are encouraged to continue with CHIN& 122.
Recommended: This course is for students with no previous experience studying Chinese. Course Outcomes
- Manage basic interactions in Chinese, in both speaking and writing, in highly predictable settings, using foundational vocabulary and common sentence patterns on themes such as self-introductions, daily life, family and friends, and making simple plans.
- Apply inference skills and overcome vocabulary gaps at a novice level by describing or paraphrasing forgotten words when navigating a limited range of real-world situations in Chinese.
- Implement strategies for exploring Chinese-speaking cultures through authentic materials such as short written texts, calligraphy, art, music, film, and other cultural products or practices.
- Read and comprehend short passages written in Chinese characters on everyday topics, including information about someone’s personal background.
