OLS 112 - News and Daily Living

This course helps students learn how to understand and think about the news they see every day. Students explore what news is, how news stories are made, and how different people and groups can influence the information we read or watch. By looking at current events, finding the main ideas, and noticing different points of view, students build skills that help them make good choices in daily life. Students also learn the basics of writing a news article and practice using the writing process. The class introduces different jobs in the news and media to show how information is created and shared. Course is graded Credit/No Credit.

Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into Program

  • Analyze free speech as it relates to news and the Bill of Rights
  • Explain what news is and identify different types of news stories
  • Describe how people, events, and institutions can influence the news we see
  • Demonstrate the writing process by writing a news article
  • Report on hard news in current events
  • Summarize the main idea and supporting details in news articles or stories
  • Present various points of view in current events
  • Identify careers in the news field and the job tasks required
