OLS 179 - Employment Law and Disability in the Workplace


2 CR

This course examines workplace laws and legal protections related to employment and disability, including discrimination, harassment, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), labor laws, unions, and workplace safety. Using case studies, court cases, and current news stories, students explore how laws apply to real workplace situations and how employees can recognize and respond to unfair or unlawful practices. Emphasis is placed on understanding legal rights, responsibilities, and appropriate self-advocacy in workplace settings. Course is graded Credit/No Credit.

Prerequisite(s): OLS 110  

Course Outcomes
  • Identify and discuss important workplace issues, such as discrimination, harassment, unions, pay and benefits, workplace safety, child labor laws, and the ADA. 

  • Summarize laws and legal protections that apply to employees in the workplace. 

  • Identify and discuss where protection can be found in the Constitution, federal laws, and state laws. 

  • Explain the difference between discrimination and workplace discipline using examples. 

  • Describe disability disclosure laws and rules, and how they affect workers. 

  • Create a personal plan for self-advocacy to address potential legal or workplace issues.
