Previously HCTM 302.
Covers general safety and quality processes in the US healthcare system, including care processes, legislative, regulatory, and accreditation processes. Includes policies and procedures pertaining to patient safety, healthcare quality, data confidentiality, privacy, release of information, and professional and practice-related ethical issues. Introduces basic statistical methods used to analyze healthcare data.

Prerequisite(s): MATH 130 and acceptance into the program, or permission of instructor.

Course Outcomes

Examine the historical development of quality management in healthcare and concepts associated with healthcare quality and safety
Research the role of regulatory agencies, accreditation, and legislative requirements in ensuring healthcare quality and safety
Discuss the role of healthcare informatics in quality management and prevention of medical errors
Present strategies to establish and maintain a quality environment in healthcare organizations, affiliates and outsourced components
Debate trends in quality management in the healthcare environment, specifically as related to provision of safe, high quality healthcare services
