HCI 315 - Electronic Health Records

Previously HCTM 315.
Provides students with a broad overview of electronic health record (EHR) design, implementation, and use of EHRs. Includes promises and pitfalls of EHRs, role of EHR in improving care quality and safety, and pros and cons of different EHR design. Government and regulatory agency requirements for EHR implementation and use will be covered along with the role of EHR users in design and implementation.

Prerequisite(s): HCI 310  and acceptance into the program, or permission of instructor.

Course Outcomes
  • Discuss differences in EHR interaction among healthcare professionals, patients, and healthcare informatics professionals 
  • Delineate best practices for design of key components of EHRs including Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE), Clinical Decision Support (CDS) 
  • Discuss the pros and cons of legacy systems, best of breed systems and all-in-one systems 
  • Critically appraise the role of EHRs in improving healthcare quality and safety through use of EHR data for clinical reporting 
  • Create strategies to mitigate challenges to EHR adoption 
  • Describe data infrastructure and technology requirements needed for optimal EHR design
