HCI 320 - HCI Data Standards & Interoperability

Previously HCTM 320.
Covers standards designed to enable interoperability of healthcare information systems. Includes benefits and challenges of healthcare systems interoperability along with data standards (HL7 v2, HL7 v3 RIM, CDA, SNOMED) that support interoperability. Students will learn how data standards are incorporated into national regulations and health information exchange.

Prerequisite(s): HCI 310  and acceptance into the program, or permission of the instructor. May be concurrently enrolled in HCI 310.

Course Outcomes
  • Describe types of healthcare information and how it is used in different healthcare settings 
  • Explain the need for fast, accurate healthcare information exchange in support of high-quality healthcare 
  • Delineate the role of healthcare data standards in supporting healthcare information exchange 
  • Develop system integration plans that ensure safe, secure, and reliable exchange of health information within and outside of the healthcare organization using interface engines 
  • Present the main elements and specific applications of healthcare informatics interoperability including information protocols, data standards, and standards development organizations 
  • Design approaches to access needed information effectively and efficiently
