AHEL 110 - Introduction to Phlebotomy

Covers phlebotomy skills and responsibilities. Includes venipuncture (blood draw) techniques and safety techniques with laboratory equipment and needles. Suitable for individuals with limited health care experience interested in venipuncture.

Recommended: First 2 of 3 Hepatitis B vaccinations completed (allow 4 weeks). Manual dexterity and ability to safely handle sharp needles.
Prerequisite(s): Placement by assessment into ENGL 101, or completion of ENGL 92 or ENGL 93 with a C or better. AHE 100, AHE 110 , AHE 120, and BIOL 108 (or BIOL 241/BIOL 242) with a C or better, or permission of Program Chair. See bellevuecollege.edu/ahe

Correctly use medical terminology of the blood and circulatory system.
Consistently use appropriate safety measures and Universal Precautions in phlebotomy settings.
Safely perform all skills associated with blood collection techniques.
Apply correct labeling and documentation methods for specimen processing.
Describe appropriate phlebotomy techniques, equipment, complications, and procedures.
Identify methods of problem solving within Clinical Laboratory Standards Insitute (CLSI) guidelines for complicated blood draws.
Perform capillary draws for hematology and chemistry testing.
