Medical Billing and Coding Certificate of Achievement

Medical Billing and Coding program will serve the growing need for medical coders and billers as the medical system continues to expand, electronic coding and documentation systems continue to change, the legal requirements for medical documentation increase, and age and retirement rate of the coding workforce impact the profession’s ability to keep up with demand for workers. This program utilizes the core health professions courses already in place in the Allied Health Education department, with the addition of supplemental specialty skill courses. No previous experience is required to enter the program.

Learning Outcomes:

Certificate recipients should possess the following skills & abilities:

  • Be prepared to obtain an entry-level administrative position in an ambulatory setting
  • Be prepared to work in ambulatory settings performing administrative and clinical duties
  • Meet CAAHEP Standards and demonstrate competency in the areas of cognitive and psychomotor medical billing and coding skills
  • Be prepared to pass credentialing and state exams and/or requirements
  • Demonstrate critical thinking, teamwork, communication, intercultural appreciation , and technical and information literacy skills

Important Notes/Conditions

This applies to the students seeking Allied health AAS-T degree upon completion of the certificate:

  • To earn any certificate in Allied Health, students must complete all required certificate program courses with a grade of “C” or better.
  • To earn the AAS-T degree in Allied Health, students must first complete a certificate in Allied Health, and they must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for all coursework taken at BC and the courses applied to the degree, including credits transferred from other colleges.
