Mammography, BAS Certificate of Completion

The Mammography Certificate of Completion is intended for registered radiologic technologists who wish to become credentialed as mammographers.  Reviews anatomy and physiology of the breast and effects of pathological conditions on image appearance. Provides instruction and clinical practice with mammography equipment, including quality control and positioning techniques.  Includes screening and diagnostic mammography, digital mammography, digital breast tomosynthesis, special procedures, characterization of normal and abnormal findings from a mammographic viewpoint, and correlation with sonographic and MRI findings. Clinical practicum includes a laboratory experience in a mammography department and 200 hours of supervised clinical practice.  Designed to satisfy didactic and clinical competency requirements for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) post-primary exam in mammography and meet Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) guidelines for Initial training in mammography, digital mammography and digital breast tomosynthesis. 

Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe breast anatomy and normal image appearance with both full-field digital mammography (FFDM) techniques and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT).
  2. Outline screening and diagnostic views and Identify position and location terminologies.
  3. Demonstrate proper technique in acquiring standard and diagnostic mammographic images.
  4. Describe the appearance of breast pathologies on mammographic images, and the performance of special procedures such as biopsy and needle localization.
  5. Interact appropriately with patients in the mammography setting, including obtaining pertinent patient history, addressing clinical questions, and giving attention to patient tolerance and limitations for the procedure.
  6. Document experience and mammography cases that will count toward eligibility for the mammography credentialing examination and Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) requirements. 
  7. Perform quality control procedures as prescribed by the American College of Radiology.
  8. Observe and/or participate in special procedures as available at the clinical site.
