HPM 415 - Community Health 5 CR
This is an expansion of our current 2 credit community health class. Students will gain the knowledge and skills to effectively promote community health and environmental justice through interventions that address social determinants of health and leverage the strengths of community and governmental organizations, as well as NGOs.
Recommended: None Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Health Promotion and Education program, or permission of the Program Chair.
Course Outcomes
- Define and explain the concept of social determinants of health and their impact on individual and community health outcomes.
- Identify and analyze various community health issues and disparities related to behavioral, social, cultural, and environmental influences.
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of community organizations, NGOs, and governmental organizations in health promotion, disease prevention, and intervention.
- Describe the ethical considerations in community-based health interventions.
- Analyze the effectiveness of existing community-based health interventions and research methodologies used in evaluating them.
- Explain the importance of collaboration and partnership building in promoting community health and justice.
- Understand the principles of community health and the impact of environmental hazards on community health.
- Describe policies and programs at the local, state, and national levels that promote health and environmental justice.
