HCML 350 - Legal & Regulatory Aspects of Healthcare 5 CR
Previously RAIM 350. Covers laws and regulations pertaining to healthcare. Topics include contracts with equipment vendors, HIPAA and Stark laws, and insurance. Case studies are used to bring a contextual focus on specific departments and organizations in the healthcare industry.
Prerequisite(s): Admission to any baccalaureate degree at Bellevue College.
Course Outcomes
- Explore aspects and trends of laws and regulations pertaining to healthcare including legislative and constituency needs/demands and discuss their implication at the department level
- Draft and review contracts with equipment manufacturers and other vendors and assess their compliance with local and federal laws
- Analyze in detail the HIPAA and Stark laws and evaluate how they impact healthcare practices
- Examine legal issues of patient rights and responsibilities, and corporate responsibilities and liability
- Debate constraints, responsibilities and strategies relating to information management in healthcare
- Discuss the ethics and the issues surrounding organizational and professional responsibility and liability, and analyze healthcare case studies
- Present the principles and elements of criminal and tort law and analyze healthcare case studies
- Analyze the legal responsibilities, constraints and potential liabilities relating to partnership, affiliates, global relationships
