HD 157 - Assertive Communication 1-3 CR
Develops awareness of personal communication styles and choices. Students practice skills that enable them to communicate directly and to get their needs met without denying the rights of others. Students will increase their self-awareness by exploring their communication patterns, irrational beliefs, and thoughts, as well as their culture, gender, race, and other diverse factors.
Course Outcomes
- Describe assertive, aggressive, passive, and passive-aggressive behaviors.
- Identify communication goals that will support students’ personal, academic, and/or career goals.
- Reflect on and identify cultural, gender, racial, and other diverse factors that can impact communication.
- Reflect on and identify internalized and irrational beliefs and thoughts that interfere with communication goals.
- Increase self-awareness by exploring one’s own communication behaviors, beliefs, culture, gender, race, and other salient diverse factors.
- Develop and practice strategies presented in the course to enhance communication and work towards meeting communication goals. Practice communication strategies to self-advocate for academic, social, career, wellness, or financial resources.
