MUSC 110 - First-Year Theory I 5 CR
First of a six-course sequence in Music Theory for music majors and students who wish to acquire insight into the building blocks of tonal music. Students learn staff notation of pitch and rhythm, essential music terminology, rhythmic simple & compound meters, diatonic & other essential scales, major/minor keys, intervals, triads/seventh chords, chord voicing, and harmonic analysis. Ear training, rhythm reading, and sight singing is also included.
Recommended: Basic knowledge of music notation and either vocal or instrumental performance.

- Express basic musical thoughts using musical notation on staff paper.
- Write and recognize pitches, intervals, diatonic scales/modes on the three main clefs.
- Write and recognize key signatures on treble and bass clefs, time signatures & meters on staff paper.
- Write and recognize triads and seventh chords in all positions on treble and bass clefs, and through chord symbols.
- Analyze musical excerpts from different styles using Roman numerals.
- Recognize major and minor scales, intervals, and triads by ear.
- Read basic musical notation in rhythmic tapping in simple meters.
- Accurately pitch match by singing within student’s vocal range.
