MUSC 211 - Second-Year Theory II 5 CR
Fifth in a six-quarter sequence in Music Theory for music majors and students who wish to acquire insight into the creation of polyphonic works & extended compositions. Students learn imitative Baroque counterpoint, motivic development, simple canonic techniques, complex and extended musical structures (Baroque invention, the fugue, continuous and thematic variations, operatic and art song, sonata, and rondo forms), Impressionism concepts and traits. Ear training, rhythm reading, and sight singing are also included.
Prerequisite(s): MUSC 210 and permission of instructor.
Course Outcomes
- Learn the intricacies of J.S. Bach’s imitative counterpoint style.
- Create an original canon employing two-part counterpoint technique.
- Learn and analyze imitative structures like the 2-part invention and the fugue.
- Learn melodic & harmonic variation techniques and create original music in continuous or thematic variation form.
- Analyze complete musical works in extended forms, like sonata & rondo form, using formal structure guidelines.
- Learn the melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic innovations of impressionist composers.
- Recognize simple, extended, contrapuntal musical forms by ear.
- Dictate simple melodic counterpoint in two parts.
- Read syncopated musical notation in rhythmic tapping in simple, compound, & odd meters.
- Sight sing 4-bar melodic fragments with sparse chromaticism within the student’s vocal range.
