RAIT 461 - Clinical Practicum II in PET

Continuation of RAIT 361. Provides the student the opportunity to develop required competencies and practice hourse for certification in Positron Emission Tomography. The course includes approximately 440 hours in one or more PET departments and clinics. The student will work with combined PET/CT and/or PET/MRI scanners, but this course will not address clinical training in computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. This course is intended to meet the degree requirements of the Technology and Nuclear Medicine concentrations of the Radiation & Imaging Sciences program as well as the requirements of the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) certificate of the Radiation and Imaging Sciences program. Grading: satisfactory/unsatisfactory. Grading: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory.

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Radiation & Imaging Sciences BAS program, RAIT 361 AND permission of the Program Chair.

Course Outcomes

All outcomes listed for RAIT 361.
Participate in quarterly quality control testing for the PET tomograph.
Perform scans using non-routine PET radiopharmaceuticals.
Demonstrate an appropriate knowledge base for non-routine PET radiopharmaceuticals, including indications for use, mechanism of localization, contraindications, and patient preparation.
Analyze and recommend fixes for image artifacts.
Discuss indications, contraindications, and possible scan results for a variety of PET procedures, based on case study review.
Troubleshoot issues involving patient preparation, multiple medical conditions, and other challenges to obtaining high-quality PET images.
Perform hot lab and radiation safety tasks.
Perform quality control on ancillary instruments (well counter, glucose meter).
Demonstrate adherence to standard patient care expectations including age-specific competencies, ethical considerations, basic life support skills, etc.
