SOC 257 - Trans Studies: Gender Beyond the Binary

How is gender being reimagined today? What challenges do trans communities experience in a cis and binary world? How do trans identities disrupt norms of sex and sexuality? Explore the diverse lives and experiences of trans people. Themes may include how trans identities intersect with race and class, gender affirming medical care, inequalities within social institutions, media representation, nonbinary identities, and trans activism.

Course Outcomes
 

  • Analyze the ways gender and the gender binary function in one’s everyday life
  • Critically examine and reflect upon how cissexism and cisnormativity are institutionalized in U.S. society
  • Describe a broad spectrum of historical, political, legal, medical, and social issues that impact trans communities
  • Explain how trans identities intersect with race, class, gender, sexuality, and (dis)ability
  • Explore histories and futures of trans activism and how trans liberation movements seek social change
