ELA 23 - High Beginning ELA


1-10 CR

Students develop reading, writing, speaking, listening, and using technology in the context of: Social Science, Public Service & Community Engagement, and Health Science. 

This is high beginning English for English Language Learners.

Course Outcomes
Outcomes align with College and Career Readiness Standards (CCR), English Language Proficiency Standards (ELP), and Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILO). 

  • Answer questions about key details in a text. (CCR Reading Anchor 1.A: ELP 1.3) 
  • Identify the main idea and retell important details in a text. (CCR Reading Anchor 2.A: ELP 1.3; ILO Information Literacy) 
  • With familiar topics, write a paragraph with a topic sentence, some sentences about the topic, and a concluding sentence.  (CCR Writing Anchor 2.A: ELP 3.3) 
  • With guidance and support, use technology to write and respond to others. (CCR Writing Anchor 6.A: ELP 2.3) 
  • Describe people, places, things, or events, and express ideas and feelings clearly.  (CCR Speaking & Listening Anchor 4.A: ELP 3.3)  
  • Participate in conversations with different partners in small and large groups. Ask and answer questions to get information, or when you don’t understand. (CCR Speaking & Listening Anchor 1.A: ELP 2.3) 
  • Use English grammar when writing or speaking. Produce simple and compound sentences. (CCR Language Anchor 1.A: ELP 10.3)  
  • Use English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling in writing. (CCR Language Anchor 2.A.)
