ELA 84 - Speaking and Listening Intermediate/Advanced


5 CR

Students develop speaking and listening skills in the contexts of Health Science, Social Science, and Business.   

This is low intermediate to advanced English for English Language Learners.

Course Outcomes
Outcomes align with College and Career Readiness Standards (CCR), English Language Proficiency Standards (ELP). and Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILO).  

  • Pose and respond to specific questions by making comments that contribute to the discussion and elaborate on the remarks of others.  (CCR Speaking & Listening Anchor 1.C: 2.5)  

  • Summarize the points a speaker makes and explain how each claim is supported by reasons and evidence.  (CCR Speaking & Listening Anchor 3.C: ELP 6.5; ILO Critical Thinking)  

  • Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak at a pace that listeners can follow. (CCR Speaking & Listening Anchor 4.C: ELP 3.5)  

  • Include multimedia components (e.g., graphics, sound) and visual displays in presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes.  (CCR Speaking & Listening Anchor 5.C: ELP 3.5)  

  • Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. (CCR Anchor 5.C: ELP 8.C)
