EXPRL 171 - Exploring Neurodivergent Identity and Culture


3 CR

Students will explore neurodivergence as a distinct cultural identity, delving into the historical, social and cultural contexts that shape the experiences of neurodivergent individuals.  Students will identify and articulate how neurodivergence is perceived by individuals and society, examining the implications of these perceptions on self-identity, communication, and community. Finally, students will critically examine the relationship between history, culture, and the expectations surrounding neurodivergent identities, reflecting on how these factors impact personal and communal experiences.

Prerequisite(s): EXPRL 170  with a C- or better

Course Outcomes
 

  • Develop and practice skills to enhance cross-cultural interaction, student-instructor interaction, student-community interaction, student-student interaction, and self-advocacy.
  • Students will examine the roles of family and community expectations, personal strengths, challenges, and social systems to inform reflection on life goals.
  • Students will construct and defend a working definition of neurodivergent identity, considering various social, cultural, and historical factors and of other identities such as race, gender, and socioeconomic status.
  • Students will identify and deconstruct the systems of power that shape the meanings of neurodivergence, exploring how these definitions influence societal attitudes and policies
