NDT 250 - NDT Overview and Electroencephalography Fundamentals


6 CR

Students will participate in an online, semi-asynchronous class environment that will cover foundational topics in neurodiagnostic technology. This review of key concepts will be targeted towards those who are transitioning from a different field as well as those currently practicing intraoperative neuromonitoring but still looking for a refresher to confidently approach this specialized, technical field with a standardized foundation of understanding regarding the basics to set themselves up for success in the remainder of the program. The general overview of neurodiagnostic technology fundamentals will culminate in an in-person three-day clinical workshop at Bellevue College, where all enrolled students will practice key skills in a controlled simulation environment, identify areas for improvement, and meet their instructors and classmates. This course may be waived at the discretion of the instructor if students meet minimum academic or professional criteria, with experience able to be substituted for degree-based education. 

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Intraoperative Neuromonitoring Certificate program, or permission of the instructor.

Course Outcomes
 

  • Describe relevant gross anatomy and physiology for the central and peripheral nervous system 

  • Correlate evoked potential waveforms with anatomical generators 

  • Recognize titles and roles of operating room staff 

  • Define HIPAA and describe compliance in relation to the role and responsibilities of an intraoperative neuromonitoring technologist 

  • Describe various concepts as they relate to working in the operating room environment, including but not limited to aseptic technique, appropriate operating room attire, infection prevention, and hazardous material management 

  • Define evidence-supported recommendations for anesthetic regimens used when performing intraoperative neuromonitoring 

  • Describe effects of different anesthetics on intraoperative signals 

  • Summarize methods for safe handling of sharps and proper disposal of biohazardous waste 

  • Define common modalities and obligate waveforms 

  • Recognize medical terminology related to common surgeries requesting intraoperative neuromonitoring 

  • Summarize recommended standards for specific modalities, as per ACNS Guidelines and ASNM Position Statements
