NDT 254 - Intraoperative Neuromonitoring Theory 3 CR
Students will participate in an online, semi-asynchronous class environment which will focus on deeper understanding of the complexities of functional neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. In this class, emphasis will be placed on identifying key information in a patient’s medical history and connecting that with clinical correlations. Topics will include common disease and injury pathologies that may result in patients proceeding with surgeries that regularly request intraoperative neuromonitoring, age-specific considerations to clinical correlates, and ACNS Guidelines and ASNM Position Statements.
Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Intraoperative Neuromonitoring Certificate program
Course Outcomes
- Identify anatomy and physiology relevant to the performance of intraoperative neuromonitoring
- Recognize the most common disease and injury pathologies that can lead to surgery, which would often request intraoperative neuromonitoring
- Identify the neurophysiological abnormalities that can result secondary to the most common disease and injury pathologies
- Identify age-specific considerations relevant to the application of intraoperative neuromonitoring
- State contraindications to specific neuromonitoring modalities
- Design and execute troubleshooting checklists for general and specific instances
- Recall recommended standards for specific modalities, as per ACNS Guidelines and ASNM Position Statements
- Identify significant changes intraoperatively using appropriate criteria per ACNS Guidelines and ASNM Position Statements
- Describe the appropriate action for an intraoperative neuromonitoring specialist to take following a significant change
