NDT 257 - Anesthesia and Advanced Topics in Intraoperative Neuromonitoring

Students will participate in an online, semi-asynchronous class environment which will focus on the role of the anesthesia team and the effects of various anesthetics on the modalities of intraoperative neuromonitoring, alongside discussions of advanced topics to include (but not limited to) communication strategies with appropriate personnel before, during, and after surgery, best practices for documentation before and during surgery, scope of practice for various roles involved in providing intraoperative neuromonitoring, and new/advanced modalities not routinely used in intraoperative neuromonitoring.

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Intraoperative Neuromonitoring Certificate program

Course Outcomes

Summarize the role of the anesthesia team in the operating room
Correlate changes in specific elements of the anesthetic regimen with effects on various modalities used during intraoperative neuromonitoring
Design practical, real-time communication strategies, in-person in the operating room, and remotely, with neurophysiological oversight
Design appropriate intraoperative documentation guidelines
Define guidelines for qualifications and scope of practice for neurodiagnostic personnel, as per ACNS Guidelines and ASNM Position Statements
Summarize topics including cortical motor mapping, deep brain stimulation, electrocorticography, facial nerve mapping, dorsal column mapping, aortic aneurysm clipping, and selective dorsal rhizotomy
