Course Outcomes
  • Manage common interactions in Chinese, in both speaking and writing, in predictable settings using high-frequency vocabulary and learned sentence patterns on themes such as hometowns, daily routines, descriptions, food, and local life. Produce short spoken and written passages—including a two-minute presentation—using characters and appropriate tones with few errors.
  • Apply inference strategies and overcome vocabulary gaps at a novice mid-level by paraphrasing or describing forgotten words when navigating a limited number of real-world situations in Chinese.
  • Interpret authentic materials related to the course themes—including short written passages, calligraphy, and cultural products such as art, music, and film—while exploring Chinese-speaking cultures with increasing complexity. Summarize short texts on everyday topics with few errors written in Chinese characters.
  • Identify a deeper level of linguistic and cultural diversity within Chinese-speaking communities and compare those features to one’s own language and culture.
  • Produce culturally informed work using a Chinese word processor with fewer errors and compose a calligraphic piece applying handwriting.
