CHIN& 123 - Chinese III


5 CR

Continues CHIN& 122 at the novice high level. Students further expand functional ability in spoken and written Chinese through work with sounds and tones, vocabulary, grammatical constructions, and Chinese characters, and practice using Chinese in authentic situations. This course requires real-time interactive language practice.  After successful completion, students are encouraged to continue with CHIN& 221.

Recommended: CHIN 122  or equivalent or instructor permission
Course Outcomes
  • Manage everyday interactions in Chinese, in both speaking and writing, across a selected variety of settings using high-frequency vocabulary and learned structures related to themes such as time, culture, daily life, and personal experiences.
  • Produce short spoken and written passages—including a two-minute presentation conveying key cultural information—with few errors. Identify and accurately write common time-related vocabulary in Chinese characters.
  • Refer back to previously mentioned information in spoken and written Chinese with increasing efficiency, using appropriate cohesive devices and character-based referencing. Summarize short passages on everyday topics in Chinese with few errors.
  • Overcome communication obstacles by compensating for language gaps at a novice-high level when navigating a range of real-world situations in Chinese. Apply strategies such as paraphrasing, circumlocution, and using context clues.
  • Reflect on the diversity of language and culture within Chinese-speaking communities and compare these cultural perspectives to one’s own. Read and comprehend passages written in Chinese characters that describe cultural practices or traditions.
  • Interpret authentic materials related to the course themes—including short texts, cultural readings, and calligraphy—to demonstrate a broader understanding of Chinese-speaking cultures.
  • Produce a cursive calligraphic work following traditional aesthetic principles and compose written passages in Chinese about cultural topics.
