CES 109 - Introduction to Women’s Studies

Previously ETHN 109.
Feminist analysis of the construction and enforcement of gender differences and gender inequalities in various contexts. Emphasis on the intersection of race, class, sexuality and nationality in the lives of women. Topics include feminist theory, motherhood, popular culture, sexual autonomy, racism, and activism in the United States, with possibilities of exploring these issues in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and South and Central America.

Recommended: Placement by assessment into ENGL 101 .
Course Outcomes
Identify their own previously-held perspectives on women and gender, and explain how those perspectives may have changed. Compare, summarize, and evaluate historical and contemporary trends in American thought and attitude regarding about women and gender. Discuss, orally or in writing, women and gender, showing the interrelation of historical events, literary works and social changes. Apply social science methodologies for analysis and students also discuss humanitarian views of the subject matter through the examination of literature and/or other forms of art.
