HCI 301 - US Healthcare Policies and Delivery Systems

Introduction to healthcare systems in the United States. Students will identify laws, regulations, standards, initiatives, and payment systems; learn the impact of policies and procedures applicable to the various healthcare organizations; and gain an appreciation of the roles and disciplines of providers throughout the US healthcare system. Includes comparison of the national and international healthcare systems.

Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into the program, or permission of instructor.

Course Outcomes

Relate current issues and controversies in healthcare to historical development of the United States (US) healthcare system
Debate the US healthcare system and compare to healthcare systems in other countries
Outline the role of federal, state and local governments in provision of healthcare in the US, including healthcare information technology (HIT) and healthcare informatics initiatives
Summarize the roles and structure of the types of healthcare organizations responsible for providing healthcare and the professionals who provide healthcare in the US
Debate the strengths and limitations of current mechanisms for financing healthcare in the US including challenges moving forward
Analyze current and pending legislation, accreditation, licensure and certification standards that affect and/or regulate healthcare delivery systems in the US
