HCI 350 - Usability and User Centered Design

Previously HCTM 350.
This course covers the role of human factors, usability, and user centered design in healthcare. Presents the impact of clinical information system design and usability on risk for medical errors. Students will evaluate usability testing methods appropriate for the type of healthcare setting and user characteristics along with system redesign to improve usability.

Prerequisite(s): HCI 310  and HCI 315 , or permission of the instructor.

Course Outcomes
  • Articulate the role of usability, human factors, and user centered design in healthcare 
  • Examine principles of usability and human factor design as applied to healthcare information systems 
  • Describe how attention to design and usability can mitigate risk for medical error in high complexity situations 
  • Apply principles of user-centered design to evaluation of healthcare information systems 
  • Evaluate current methods for usability assessment in different healthcare settings 
  • Develop guidelines for usability testing of a given healthcare information system taking into account the setting and users 
  • Discuss the impact of cognitive workflow on clinical information system usability
