HCI 435 - Healthcare Informatics Systems Operation


5 CR

Previously HCTM 435.
Covers all aspects of healthcare clinical information system implementation and administration. Includes vendor selection, implementation planning, system customization, configuration and testing, user training, key issues, best practices, and adherence to healthcare standards and regulations.

Prerequisite(s): HCI 310  and HCI 315 , or permission of instructor.

Course Outcomes
  • Investigate best practice, strategies, and plans for system selection, installation, monitoring, testing, maintenance, upgrades and security 
  • Examine the impact of healthcare information system implementation, update, and maintenance on overall operations, taking into consideration costs/benefits, timing, impact on short-term and long-term system performance and users 
  • Develop and document systems integration and implementation plans, including major tasks and outcomes, roles and responsibilities, timelines, risk analysis and contingency plans, and resources 
  • Present the role of the systems administrator in documentation and reporting all aspects of clinical and administrative systems in healthcare organizations 
  • Prepare for disasters and plan for recovery 
  • Determine an optimal testing plan using best practices in systems integration, hardware and software installation and configuration, unit and systems testing, and systems deployment documentation 
  • Present standards, regulations and accreditation requirements relating to systems selection, implementation, and administration and analyze their impact on day-to-day and long-term planning of operations
