NMTEC 262 - Clinical Nuclear Medicine II

Discusses advanced topics in Nuclear Medicine. Topics include hematology and immunology, laboratory techniques in nuclear medicine, bone densitometry, advanced nuclear neurology, pediatric nuclear medicine, rarely done imaging studies, and radionuclide therapy review. It also includes an introduction to medical research, use of library and professional resources, and reading and interpreting scientific literature.

Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into program.

Course Outcomes
  • Discuss types of research, ethical considerations in doing research, parts of a research paper, and critical analysis of published articles in the nuclear medicine literature. 
  • Find scholarly resources from library databases and professional societies. 
  • Review the operational principles of laboratory equipment including pipettes, centrifuges and fume hoods. 
  • Describe the components of human blood, the workings of the immune system, and the structure and manufacture of antibodies. 
  • Explain the principles and performance of bone densitometry, factors affecting test results, and the meaning of the results. 
  • Discuss the application of nuclear medicine techniques to imaging of malignant breast tumors, neurotransmitter systems in the brain, and several rarely done studies. 
  • Review radioiodine therapy including context, techniques, and procedures. 
  • Discuss pediatric nuclear medicine including patient care techniques, developmental levels, and variations in imaging studies for children.
