HPM 325 - Foundations of Health Promotion

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of health promotion and health education. Students will explore the historical and philosophical foundations of the discipline and its relationship to public health, develop an understanding of key concepts and theories, and learn about the skills and competencies necessary for professional practice.

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Health Promotion and Management program, or permission of the Program Chair.

Course Outcomes
  • Define and apply key terms used in health education and promotion.
  • Describe the historical and philosophical development of health education and public health in the United States.
  • Identify career opportunities for health educators in various practice settings.
  • Apply health behavior theories and models to practical situations.
  • Identify the core competencies of an entry-level health educator as outlined by the NCHEC.
  • Explain the concept of health literacy and its impact on health decision-making.
  • Differentiate between various health philosophies and apply them to professional practice.
  • Analyze the cultural, social, and political factors that influence health decisions.
  • Develop a personal philosophy on the importance of health promotion.
