HPM 330 - Outdoor Leadership for Health Educators


5 CR

Exposes students to team-building processes, adventure planning and risk assessment. Topics include conflict resolution, team formation, group dynamics, leadership, risk management and decision making.

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Health Promotion and Education program, or permission of the Program Chair.

Course Outcomes
  • Describe theories of team formation, and develop a personal leadership inventory in the context of specific group dynamics.
  •  Identify the health benefits of outdoor recreation on population health and steps to mitigate barriers to access for varied populations
  • Identify perceived and actual risks associated with select outdoor activities and develop risk management plans for specific outdoor events and locations.
  • Develop project implementation plans using a logical and transferable planning rubric.
  • Develop working experience with these practices through cumulative and experiential activities.
  • Evaluate leadership skills developed in the context of outdoor activities as used for the promotion of health and community.
