HPM 340 - Health and Wellness Coaching

This course provides a comprehensive overview of health and wellness coaching, equipping students with the tools and strategies to guide individuals and groups towards positive and lasting lifestyle changes. Discover diverse coaching methodologies, ethical principles, impactful counseling techniques,and evidence-based approaches to empower clients on their journey towards improved health and well-being.

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Health Promotion and Education program, or permission of the Program Chair.

Course Outcomes
  • Define and distinguish health coaching from other helping professions like counseling, advising, and prescribing.
  • Analyze the impact of social determinants of health (SDOH) on health behavior and develop culturally competent coaching practices.
  • Compare and contrast various coaching methodologies, principles, and strategies to promote client engagement and sustained behavior change.
  • Apply legal and ethical guidelines relevant to the practice of health and wellness coaching.
  • Develop and refine a personal coaching style utilizing effective communication and delivery methods.
  • Identify and assess client needs, recognizing potential referral pathways for specialized services.
