NMTEC 234 - Clinical Education V


13 CR

Final course in a five-course clinical internship sequence. Assignment to multiple sites in specialized areas of Nuclear Medicine including PET/CT, Nuclear Cardiology, radiopharmacy, and a pediatric observational rotation, all under supervision of licensed technologists. Student broadens knowledge and practice beyond general Nuclear Medicine. Focuses are on professional demeanor, independent practice, and preparation to become an entry-level technologist. 

Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into the program.

Course Outcomes
  1. Demonstrate understanding of the nuclear medicine studies performed at each specialty rotation site.
  2. Perform PET and nuclear cardiology studies.
  3. Acquire and analyze a 12-lead electrocardiogram, and identify cardiac rhythms that are considered potentially life-threatening.
  4. Perform and analyze quality control and hot lab procedures in at least one specialty rotation.
  5. Analyze nuclear medicine imaging studies with the assistance of nuclear medicine professionals.
  6. Prepare a case report based on a patient in one of the specialty rotations.
  7. Perform radiopharmacy tasks including:
    • Milking a Mo-99/Tc-99m generator.
    • Preparing radiopharmaceutical kits and assessing their quality.
    • Drawing radiopharmaceutical doses.
    • Performing quality control and radiation safety tasks associated with radiopharmacy practice.
  8. Discuss the practice of nuclear medicine in the pediatric environment, including:
    • Types of nuclear medicine studies commonly performed on children.
    • Methods for immobilizing a young child for a nuclear medicine study.
    • Communication with patient and family in the pediatric environment.
    • Other aspects of pediatric patient care.
  9. Demonstrate competence in specific aspects of nuclear medicine practice and patient care in the pediatric setting.
