SOC& 101 - Introduction to Sociology

What impacts do society and culture have on you and your choices? How is inequality embedded in society and what power do we, as individuals, have in transforming the world around us? Explore a broad introduction to sociology and learn useful ways to observe and analyze your own life, as well as the lives of others. Themes may include identity development, race, media, deviance, gender, culture, and social class.

Course Outcomes
 

  • Critically examine the social landscape in which you live and how life experiences differ according to race, class, gender and sexuality.
  • Identify the ways in which cultural and social institutions shape the everyday experiences of individuals, groups and communities.
  • Describe fundamental sociological concepts, theories, and theorists, and apply them to real-life situations.
