STEM 111 - STEM Cohort: Intersections of Disability 2 CR
STEM Cohort: Intersections of Disability is the first course in the STEM Cohort: Intersections of Disability sequence, designed for disabled students pursuing science, technology, engineering, or math studies. Students learn STEM-specific strategies for academic success while navigating a disability, explore STEM career options, craft a strengths-based professional resume, network directly with disabled professionals in their fields of interest, and identify resources and hands-on learning experiences that can help them be successful as disabled students and as STEM professionals, with a focus on community, self-advocacy, and disabled identity development.
This course sequence is a sibling to the STEM to Stern cohort, shares workshops, presentations, and projects, and merges with the STEM Squared Cohort for Year Two for the purpose of disabled and non-disabled students learning together.
Prerequisite(s): Instructor permission - cohort
Course Outcomes
- Develop disabled self-identity within theoretical and real-life applications.
- Advocate for self as a disabled person in STEM classes, interviews, and workplace.
- Explore and engage in STEM research opportunities.
- Plan a STEM career path.
- Relate their experiences to those of disabled and STEM professionals, faculty, and peers, and build community with same.
