AHEL 120 - Introduction to Clinical Laboratory


5 CR

Provides an overview of clinical laboratory assistant work including organizational structures, regulatory standards, quality assurance practices, and basic clinical laboratory procedures.

Prerequisite(s): Prerequisite: Placement by assessment into ENGL 101 , or completion of ENGL 92  or ENGL 93  with a C (2.0) or better.

Corequisite or Prerequisite: AHE 110 , AHE 120 , and BIOL 108  (or AHE 130  or BIOL 241  AND BIOL 242 ) with a C or better, or permission of Program Chair. See bellevuecollege.edu/ahe

 

 

Course Outcomes

  1. Describe the general structure, functions, and operation of a clinical laboratory and the roles and responsibilities of a clinical laboratory assistant. 
  2. Apply laboratory safety and quality assurance procedures. 
  3. Identify the laboratory tests associated with each clinical laboratory function. 
  4. Apply skills in using an Laboratory Information System (LIS), quality control, and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived testing within the scope of practice of a CLA. 
  5. Apply knowledge and skills for computerized laboratory systems.
