AHEM 124 - Clinical Procedures II


5 CR

This course introduces laboratory practices, including specimen collection and processing, urinalysis, venipuncture, hematology, basic microbiology, and specialized laboratory tests. Topics cover relevant pathology, interpretation of normal and abnormal values, computations, charting, and the scope of practice. Clinical skills include EKG, allergy and asthma testing, spirometry, peak flow measurement, venipuncture, and CLIA-waived tests. Students will practice lab procedures within the context of assisting providers, following physician orders, and adhering to clinical protocols.

Recommended: AHE 100  and AHEA 100 .
Prerequisite(s): Completion of AHE 110  and AHE 120  with a grade of C or better. Completion of AHEM 120  with a grade of C or better, or concurrent enrollment in AHEM 120 ; or permission of Program Chair.

Course Outcomes
  • Perform essential diagnostic and laboratory procedures, including venipuncture, capillary/dermal puncture, CLIA-waived tests, urinary catheterization, EKGs, allergy and asthma testing, spirometry, and peak flow measurement.
  • Obtain and test biological specimens while adhering to patient preparation protocols and quality control guidelines to ensure accurate results.
  • Complete patient referrals for outside diagnostic testing by accurately documenting and communicating relevant information.
  • Demonstrate professional and accurate patient instructions, including preparation for diagnostic tests, using provider orders and protocols.
  • Provide patient education within the medical assisting scope of practice and other topics, ensuring clear communication tailored to individual patient needs.
  • Identify the purpose of laboratory requisitions and reports and demonstrate the ability to accurately complete, interpret, and utilize them for diagnostic purposes.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies while following safety guidelines to prevent accidents or injuries in the laboratory setting.
  • Adhere to regulations governing specimen collection, handling, storage, and transportation as outlined by external laboratories, ensuring compliance with quality control and safety standards.
