AHEP 101 - Clinical Procedures III


5 CR

This course covers the fundamental concepts of pharmacology, including medication classifications, dosage calculations, prescriptions, references, consent, and the scope of practice for Medical Assistants. Competencies include administering oral and parenteral medications, eye and ear instillation, suppositories, vaccinations, and assisting with implanted devices. Students engage in critical thinking exercises to address order coordination, manage complications, and provide patient education. 

Prerequisite(s): AHEM 124  with a C or better (or concurrent enrollment), or permission of the Program Chair. 

Course Outcomes
  • Identify medication classifications and details, including indications for use, desired effects, side effects, and adverse reactions.

  • Calculate accurate drug dosages using the metric, household, and other standard measurement systems. 

  • Prepare written prescriptions and refill authorizations following clinical standing orders.

  • Document medication administration, reconciliation, and allergies using electronic medical record systems. 

  • Explain drug legislation and regulations (e.g., DEA, FDA, Controlled Substance Act of 1970), immunization schedules, and proper medication handling.

  • Describe the scope of practice for Medical Assistants regarding medication administration at the state level.

  • Prepare and administer medications while adhering to the seven rights of medication administration.

  • Accurately pronounce, spell, and recognize commonly prescribed medications, including their generic and trade names, ensuring correct communication with patients and healthcare providers, as outlined in the AAMA and MAERB competency standards.
