The BAS Medical Dosimetry concentration is designed for individuals who are ARRT certified Radiation Therapists and want to become Certified Medical Dosimetrists.
The Medical Dosimetry program is 7 quarters or 22 months in length and is designed for the working professional. The required didactic courses are online. Synchronous lectures are typically scheduled in the evening between 6-9 PM Pacific Time. The clinical portion is 2-3 days per week beginning the second quarter.
The program is aligned with the American Association of Medical Dosimetrists (AAMD) curriculum and prepares candidates for Medical Dosimetry Certification Board (MDCB) eligibility and employment.
The degree includes 185 credits, 50 of those from national certification and 37 from prerequisite/co-requisite work. The other 98 credits are 300-400 level classes in the Radiation and Imaging Sciences and Healthcare Management and Leadership programs, as well as general education courses in economics, communications, and ethics.
Learning Outcomes
Degree recipients should possess the following skills and abilities:
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of medical dosimetry in its support of radiation oncology
- Design treatment plans for three-dimension conformal radiotherapy
- Design treatment plans for intensity-modulated radiation therapy
- Design treatment plans for brachytherapy treatments
- Perform hand calculations to verify plan accuracy
- Effectively communicate with an interdisciplinary radiation oncology team
- Demonstrate an understanding of leadership, ethical and economic issues as they pertain to medical dosimetry
Program Eligibility
Individuals must have:
- National certification in Radiation Therapy
- Demonstrated completion from a regionally accredited college of the following courses, or their equivalent, with a grade point average of 2.0 or better:
- College-level English composition
- Two courses in human anatomy and physiology and one course in sectional anatomy, and earn a grade of 3.0 or better in Anatomy and Physiology to be successful in the program.
- Humanities course
- Social sciences course
- Precalculus (or assessment into a higher-level course). Candidates must take precalculus within 5 years.
Degree Requirements
In addition to eligibility requirements, students must achieve the following:
- Completion of 93 quarter credits in the general program and concentration requirements, with a grade of “C”, or better
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for all coursework taken at BC and the courses to the degree, including credits transferred from other colleges
- At least 45 quarter credits for the degree must be completed in residence at BC, of which 30 credits must be upper division
Application Process
This is a selective admissions program. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission, as the number of qualified applicants may exceed the number of available seats in the program. It is recommended that students meet with the program manager before filling out the BAS application to make sure they qualify. To be considered for the Bachelor of Applied Science in Radiation and Imaging Sciences- Medical Dosimetry, prospective students must submit the following:
- First-time Bellevue College students must apply for General Admission before filling out the BAS degree application. Processing time for general admissions is typically 1-3 business days.
- All students who have transfer credits will need to follow the steps for submitting official transcripts from all regionally accredited colleges attended other than Bellevue College. This will include completing the program-specific Transfer Credit Request form for each transcript. Your application can be reviewed with unofficial transcripts. However, your acceptance into the program will not be determined until official transcripts have been received and evaluated.
- Fill out and submit the BAS application. The Application Fee of $125 will be accepted at the time of completion. You will also be required to upload all unofficial transcripts if not already on file with Bellevue College.
