Return to: Programs of Study
Students pursuing the Biomedical Research Certificate start by learning a variety of techniques in molecular biology, protein biochemistry and immunochemistry. They proceed to select a research topic, formulate a relevant research question and design a detailed plan to answer that question. Each student works individually on their research proposal, collecting and analyzing data and documenting their results. The project culminates with the preparation of a scientific poster and a seminar to be presented to the students and faculty in the Molecular Biosciences program.
Eligibility Requirements
CHEM 161 , BIOL 160 , and BIOL 211 or equivalent courses with a C (2.0) or better.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the certificate students will be able to:
- Competently use a variety of modern techniques in molecular biology
- Design and carry out new molecular biology experiments
- Record and analyze the results of such experiments
- Communicate the results of their work to scientists and non-scientists
- With demonstrated mastery of a specific topic, generate a relevant research question
- Prepare a written research proposal with clearly identified steps and its corresponding timeline
- Apply the scientific method to obtain the answer to the chosen research question
- Comply with ethical principles throughout the execution, documentation and analysis of the experiments
