INTST 230 - Latin American Political Economy & Society

A comparative exploration of the questions and challenges of Latin American economic and societal transformation, of the dynamic interaction between global and domestic factors, and of the regional responses and outcomes this process engenders.

Prerequisite(s): ECON 201  or INTST 201  or POLSC 103 or SOC 201  recommended.

Course Outcomes
  • Describe the social, economic, political, and environmental elements that are influencing the Latin American region;
  • Develop an integrated understanding of social structure, culture, economics, politics, and history in Latin America;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of global interdependence, international regimes and the process of globalization in the context of Latin America political economy;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how civil society dynamics and ethnicity, class, and gender are influencing Latin American political economy and development;
  • Use the comparative method as an analytical and interpretive tool;
  • Demonstrate improved writing and critical-thinking skills through research projects.
