NURS 460 - Health Information Technology


5 CR

This course is an introduction to health information systems and informatics concepts encountered in healthcare settings. The course is designed to enable students to use information management and patient care technologies to deliver safe and effective care to diverse patient populations in a variety of settings.

Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into BSN program.

Course Outcomes
  1. Analyze the use of health information systems and the effect on interdisciplinary communication in the healthcare setting.  

  1. Appraise health information technologies and systems used in healthcare relative to quality improvement, costs, social determinants of health, climate change and improved safety outcomes for both patients and healthcare professionals. 

  1. Analyze ethics and privacy rights issues affected by health information technology and social media.  

  1. Evaluate the nurse’s role and responsibilities in the design, selection, implementation, and application of information technology and systems in healthcare.  

  1. Demonstrate leadership and advocation skills by creating Public Service Announcements that include analysis of technologies, evidence-based practice, and patient outcomes.
