PE 256 - Introduction to Mountain Bike Instruction


2 CR

Prepare students to work as mountain bike coaches and/or volunteer trail builders; introduce students to foundational mountain bike riding skills; develop an understanding of recreation policy in Washington and trail use / open space advocacy.  Students receive instructor training, learn about progressive teaching and ride techniques, and experience and explore Mountain Bike trail building and advocacy all while learning to employ appropriate risk assessment skills. The class meets at the BC campus, and at local trails along the I-90 corridor. Grade Scale: A (4.0)/ Satisfactory (2.0)/ Unsatisfactory (0.0).

Prerequisite(s): Permission of instructor. Minimal prior mountain bike and instructional experience required.

Course Outcomes
  • Experience riding and instructing on green (level 1) or blue (level 2) level trails; bike body separation, braking control, descending  control, climbing, cornering, obstacles
  • Describe the basics of body position and balance on their one’s bicycle for a variety of terrain and skills.
  • Outline the role of Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance in mountain bike trail building and advocacy.
  • Apply Mountain bike specific technics for class structure, group management, Risk Management and Fundamental Ride Elements and Skills
  • Describe approaches to teaching mountain bike techniques, including diagrams, video clips, practice courses, etc
  • Assess and match appropriate ride abilities to trail selection for desired experiences and outcomes on Level 1 and 2 terrain.
  • Clearly articulate safe riding practice and procedures for individual and group rides.
