NURS 249 - Care of the Client within Their Environment

This course provides students the chance to experience the realm of behavioral health nursing and the well-being of the mind while simultaneously exploring health promotion and care for individuals and families in the context of their diverse environments. It integrates concepts of social determinants of health, population health and behavioral health to guide the provision of care. Throughout the course, students will develop the confidence to articulate nursing priorities, foster clinical judgment, and engage in reflective practice, with a particular focus on the mental and emotional aspects of health. Prerequisite(s): NURS 124 with a grade of C or better, and NURS 125 with credit.
 

Course Outcomes
  • Establish and maintain a therapeutic relationship with clients and/or their families.
  • Engage in reflective practice, with a particular focus on the mental and emotional aspects of health.
  • Utilize clinical judgment to improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations through a lens of the social determinants of health.
  • Identify and reduce safety risks for patients with behavioral health disorders.
  • Assess clients for pertinent changes in mental and emotional health status in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with health team members for effective continuity of care for individuals and families in the context of their environment.
  • Identify technology and information management systems to support safe processes of care and use systematic documentation to ensure accuracy of clinical records.
