HCI 325 - Clinical Informatics

The practice of caring for patients in healthcare has been greatly impacted by information technology, especially with the widespread acceptance of electronic health records. This course introduces concepts and skills for nurses, patient care providers, and informaticists to understand how to acquire and document patient data, retrieve and manage available electronic resources, and summarize the types of available sources and modalities such as the electronic health records (EHR) healthcare information technology (HIT), and other diagnostic devices. This course also examines the use of informatics to manage healthcare operations.

Prerequisite(s): Admission to any baccalaureate program at Bellevue College.

Course Outcomes
  • Identify sources of electronic documentation for patient care
  • Classify the types of data used in patient care and where it is stored
  • Assess how organization policy impacts the acquisition, documentation, and storage of patient data
  • Compare approaches to visualizing and managing patient data
  • Apply data analytics to census management and supply chain processes
  • Examine how data is used in patient education and telehealth to improve patient outcomes
