ELIUP 77 - Integrated Skills 5

Students master the academic essay. Assigned writing tasks are varied with an emphasis on timed writing and revision. Students master higher-level sentence grammar forms including sentences with adverb clauses, noun clauses, and adjective clauses. Students read professional essays and articles and use them as examples and context for their student essays.

Prerequisite(s): Admission into the English Language Institute and completion of ELIUP 57  with a C- (1.7) or better, or permission of the department.

Course Outcomes
 

  • Write grammatically correct sentences and use sentence variety
  • Use the writing process from brainstorming to final draft
  • Paraphrase and summarize longer and more complex reading passages
  • Write paragraph answers to essay questions
  • Determine the purpose of your writing and compose an appropriate essay
  • Focus the essay with a clear thesis statement and topic sentences
  • Make a point and support it with relevant evidence
  • Proofread and edit written work
  • Increase reading speed and comprehension
  • Identify the main idea of a reading
  • Analyze the organization of a reading
  • Analyze the writer’s point of view in a reading
  • Think critically about readings and respond in discussion and writing
  • Take complete and accurate notes from readings and discussions
