Academic Concentrations


Programs with an Academic Concentration

Students must complete a minimum of 20 credit hours in the concentration discipline as determined by the program.

A student is eligible to apply for an academic concentration if:

  • The department has been approved to offer the concentration option
  • The student is pursuing an Associate in Arts and Science transfer degree

Anthropology


20 Credits

A maximum of 5 credits may be applied to distribution requirements. 15 concentration credits must be applied to Electives.

Students take 20 (or 21) credits of required courses to earn a concentration in Anthropology. These four courses provide the basic foundation of Anthropology and represent the 4-field approach of American Anthropology. All of them are offered on campus and on-line.

Criminal Justice


20 Credits

A maximum of 5 credits may be applied to distribution requirements. 15 concentration credits must be applied to Electives.

Communication Studies


20 Credits

A maximum of 5 credits may be applied to distribution requirements. 15 concentration credits must be applied to Electives.

Cultural and Ethnic Studies


20 Credits 

A maximum of 5 credits may be applied to distribution requirements. 15 concentration credits must be applied to Electives.

Gender Studies


20 Credits

Students pursuing an Associate in Arts and Science transfer degree may elect to complete an Academic Concentration in Gender Studies by completing 20 credits from a focused list of courses (with grades of C- or better). Students should take four of the following courses, distributed across at least three disciplines:

Geography


20 Credits

A maximum of 5 credits may be applied to distribution requirements. 15 concentration credits must be applied to Electives.

Grade requirement of C- or better in each concentration course

History


20 Credits

A maximum of 5 credits may be applied to distribution requirements. 15 concentration credits must be applied to Electives.

Mathematics


20 Credits

A maximum of 5 credits may be applied to distribution requirements. 15 concentration credits must be applied to Electives.

20 credits in mathematics taken at Bellevue College with at least two of the following courses:

Political Science


20 Credits

A maximum of 5 credits may be applied to distribution requirements. 15 concentration credits must be applied to Electives.

Psychology


20 Credits

A maximum of 5 credits may be applied to distribution requirements. 15 concentration credits must be applied to Electives.

Take four courses (20 credits) in Psychology as part of the AAS degree

Grade requirement of C- or better in each concentration course

Sociology


20 Credits

A maximum of 5 credits may be applied to distribution requirements. 15 concentration credits must be applied to Electives.

Grade Requirement of C- or better in each concentration course

Sustainability


20 Credits

A maximum of 10 credits may be applied to distribution requirements. All other concentration requirements must be applied to Electives.

  1. 10 credits from each of two categories of courses (IS and CA, see below), for a total of 20 credits.
  2. 2-credits Sustainability Seminar (EXPRL 195/196/197)
  3. A 15-hour minimum service learning requirement. This is a requirement of the concentration and is not attached to a specific course, such that students do not earn any course credit for their service learning project.
