Health Promotion and Education, BAS

The Bachelor of Applied Science in Health Promotion & Education is an established career-oriented cohort program. Our graduates are prepared to develop effective health promotion and wellness programs for individuals, communities, and organizations. Our mission is to promote wellness and health literacy, improve health equity, and prevent injuries, infectious, and chronic diseases.

The degree is developed for individuals with an interest in “helping professions.” It uses multiple pedagogy and theories from health sciences, marketing, business, education, and psychology, combined with social justice principles to promote behavior change through policy, advocacy, and information dissemination. The goals are to keep the disease from developing, promote early detection of disease, manage chronic disease, remove systemic barriers, and build systemic support to increase wellness in all areas for all people.

Learning Outcomes

Degree recipients should possess the skills and abilities described below:

• Locate, use, evaluate, and synthesize public health information.

• Understand the underlying science of human health and disease, including opportunities for promoting and protecting health across the lifespan. 
• Apply knowledge of socioeconomic, behavioral, biological, environmental, and cultural factors to develop effective health promotion programs.
• Conduct needs assessment to develop, implement, coordinate, market, manage, and evaluate evidence-based health promotion programs.
• Collaborate effectively in multi-disciplinary work teams in support of health promotion goals.
• Identify barriers to health and wellness and promote evidence-based strategies for behavior change.
• Utilize public health promotion and behavior change theories to communicate public health information, in both oral and written forms, through a variety of media and to diverse audiences.

Program Eligibility

Successful planning for this degree is best done with an advisor or the program director.

• Individuals must demonstrate completion from a regionally accredited college of the prerequisite requirements, or their equivalent, with a grade point average of 2.0 or better:
  • Related college-level coursework: 40 CR and ENGL 101 5 CR  

Degree Requirements

In addition to eligibility requirements, students must also achieve the following:

• Completion of 90 quarter credits in the general program and concentration requirements, with a grade of “C”, or better.
• A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for all coursework taken at BC and the courses applied to the degree, including credits transferred from other colleges.
• All co-requisite and core program courses require a minimum grade of “C”, or better.
• At least 45 quarter credits for the degree must be completed in residence at BC, of which 30 credits must be upper-division.
• At least one course in either Prerequisites, Co-requisites, or core courses needs to meet the Diversity Degree Requirement  

Application Process

This is a selective admissions program. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission, as the number of qualified applicants may exceed the number of available seats in the program. It is recommended that students meet with the program manager before filling out the BAS application to make sure they qualify.  Check the program’s website today to see if you are ready to apply and schedule an appointment.

To be considered for the Bachelor of Applied Science in Health Promotion and Education, prospective students must submit the following:

• First-time Bellevue College students must apply for General Admission before filling out the BAS degree application. Processing time for general admissions is typically 1-3 business days.
• All students who have transfer credits will need to follow the steps for submitting official transcripts from all regionally accredited colleges attended other than Bellevue College. This will include completing the program-specific Transfer Credit Request form for each transcript. Your application can be reviewed with unofficial transcripts. However, your acceptance into the program will not be determined until official transcripts have been received and evaluated.
• Prepare your supporting materials, fill out and submit the BAS application. You will also be required to upload all unofficial transcripts if not already on file with Bellevue College.
