The neurodiagnostic technologist (NDT) operates sophisticated equipment that displays the electrical activity of the brain and nervous system. The ND technologist works alongside physicians who interpret the data and provide clinical impressions. ND is a diverse field that includes electroencephalography, nerve conduction studies, intraoperative monitoring, long-term epilepsy monitoring, polysomnography (sleep disorder studies), and evoked potential. Generally working in a hospital or clinical setting, ND technologists prepare patients for procedures, record electrical potentials, obtain medical histories, and calibrate and maintain equipment. A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 is required to graduate with a minimum of 2.0 in any given course.
Learning Outcomes
Degree recipients should possess the skills & abilities described below:
- Interpret accurate, diagnostically acceptable ND tests in a hospital or clinical laboratories
- Apply neuroscience to ND recordings and diagnosis of disease conditions
- Interpret the electrical display of EEG-PSG-EP recordings
- Practice patient-centered care in accordance with the ethical and legal framework of the NDT
- Collaborate as a member of the health care team to ensure clinical effectiveness
- Evaluate ND tests (i.e., intraoperative monitoring, nerve conduction studies, ambulatory recordings, long-term video, EEG monitoring)
- Operate ND diagnostic instrumentation
- Prepare written summary reports for the neurologist
- Practice infection control
- Apply theoretical knowledge to relate the ND recordings to a diagnosis of disease conditions
